Every morning at exactly 8:17, an elderly man visited the diner where I worked, ordering one egg, dry toast, and black coffee before sitting alone in the corner booth for hours. Although some customers complained, I noticed his loneliness and began bringing him extra food, which slowly led to quiet conversations about his life, his late wife, and his former career as a watch repairman. After his wife died, the diner had become his only comfort, and he once told me that it helped him remember how to be around people. Then one Monday, he failed to appear, and weeks later, his daughter visited to tell me he had passed away. She handed me his notebook, filled with journal entries describing how much our little diner and the waitress who never made him feel invisible meant to him. Deeply moved, I framed one of his entries and placed it near the register as a reminder that even the smallest gestures can make someone feel loved and remembered. To this day, I still glance at the door every morning at 8:17, knowing that although my friend is gone, the kindness we shared will never disappear.
