My Daughter Stood Up for Me When No One Else Would..

As a single mother working two jobs as a waitress to afford private school for my 13-year-old daughter, I was humiliated when her teacher publicly told me my daughter would grow up just like me, taking orders. The next day, the headmaster urgently called me to school, where I found my daughter standing on a classroom chair in front of a whiteboard that read, “My mom works 2 jobs so I can be here. What do you do that’s so special?” The teacher tried to erase the message, but my daughter refused to move, and all 23 students stood on their chairs in solidarity until the teacher apologized. The teacher resigned that week, and on the drive home, my daughter told me, “She made you feel small, Mom. You’re not small. You’re the biggest person I know.” I’m still a waitress, still wearing my uniform, but I’ve never felt ashamed of my job again because my daughter taught me that honest work is something to be proud of.
